Rolf Method of Structural Integration
Benefits: • Improved posture • Reduced or eliminated tension and pain • Increased energy and sense of well-being • Greater flexibility and range of motion • Improved balance, coordination and athletic performance • Increased body, mind and heart awareness • Psychological & emotional growth
This is the Rolfing 10 series! Ida Rolf created this dynamic system to balance bodies and relieve pain. She called it Structural Integration. Everyone else called it Rolfing. Rolf Structural Integration bodywork can be experienced as single organization sessions, or as 10 cumulative integration sessions. The series is an elegant process of unwinding and releasing aquired stresses and compensations that have become lodged in our soft tissue. Working with fascia, the three dimensional soft tissue network of structure of our bodies that is present from just under our skin to our deepest internal layers, we release physical, emotional and neurological patterns of holding.
Our bodies have a built in, spring loaded, anti-gravity response to our environment. When we are balanced across our joints and stacked around our central core (the line), our bodies respond by expanding into this ever-present force of gravity.
The Rolf Structural Integration approach releases your body through a systematic series of sessions using slow, deep contacts and movement, combined with awareness to release chronic holding and bring hydration to tissue on a cellular level. Once your tissue is fluid and free, your joints and physical structures find a more natural balance in relation to one another. This balancing creates an uplifting feeling of freedom and ease in the world. By freeing tissue to operate more optimally, we free up internal unconscious tensions which offers us more energy.
This work is highly focused on your fascia (connective tissue), which gives our bodies their shape and houses more free and sensory nerve endings than muscle. In many cases, chronic pain is in this fascia. Rolf Structural Integration changes the way we view our relationship to movement and integrates our limbs with our core. Rolf work offers our body the experience of expansion in relation to gravity. This work provides lasting changes in your body. It also changes your point of perception.
Rolf Structural Organization (Tune Up/Tune In Sessions)
Benefits: • Reduced or eliminated tension and pain • Improved posture • Increased relaxation and flexibility • Improved athletic performance • Increased energy and feeling of lightness
These session are geared both toward individuals wanting to work particular challenges, those who have completed your 10 series. Periodic tune up or touch in sessions will be helpful to keep you body open and balanced. These can be either 1 or 1.5 hours in length. The frequency is entirely up to you. Usually monthly is ideal, but choose what works for your body and your lifestyle.
Benefits: • Whole body alignment • Improved function of the brain and spinal cord • Increased relaxation • Reduced or eliminated pain and dysfunction varieties • Improved function of eyes, ears and nose • Improved connection and function of whole body system • Safe for infants and aging populations
In this approach, we work with a very gentle touch to evaluate and harmonize the body’s natural state of well-being and ability to heal. We direct our attention on the systems of the body, particularly the cranial bones, the spinal column, and the sacrum. The membranes or dura (fascia in the spinal column) of the craniosacral system have subtle rhythms and flows of fluid, mainly from the rhythms and inherent movement of the cerebral spinal fluid. This fluid is related to our inherent life force. Subtle movement of the membranes, the ebb and flow, in our spinal column and around our cranium is a determining factor in our state of health and well being. CranioSacral Therapy addresses inertia or patterns of restriction in our core and releases dysfunction at a deeply felt level. It has profound effects on the central nervous system and relieves many dysfunctions while harmonizing and balancing the structure of your entire body.
Private Yoga & Movement Classes/Therapy
Benefits: • Reduced or eliminated tension and pain • Increased energy and sense of well-being • Increased strength in both body and mind • Increased mental alertness • Reduced stress • Improved sleep and digestion • Overall improved sense of connection with our world
Here is where we learn traditional asana practice, as well as gentle and deep movements for alignment and awareness to release and relieve chronic challenges and pains. We also use movement to strengthen both body and mind.
Traditional yoga poses are themselves therapeutic if they are done with safe alignment and engagement. It is helpful to learn this with knowledgeable instruction and guidance. If we are beginning a movement practice in our later years, we may not have much freedom in our joints and soft tissue. It takes time (6-12 months) for the lasting change in our fascia (soft tissue) to reshape itself. Along the way we feel the benefits of active and passive stretches. We open up channels of energy as well as get our physical fluids moving. The more we move, the better we feel. The more we move, the more our soft tissue organizes into a more supportive, more fluid system that is able to respond more efficiently to the demands we ask of it. This ancient practice, taught well, effects body and mind, causing profound changes in the way we approach life.
And when we are injured or in pain, we need more specific and even more knowledgeable instruction to help us remedy our challenges. Both of these practices employ alignment and actions that once learned, can be applied to many different scenarios.
In yoga and movement, as in life, there is no end. When we are ready for more, both physically and psychologically, more is certainly available. But first, we must become familiar and adept at the basics of safe movement.
